The word balas, a synonym of spinel, originated from Persian Bada ḵ šān, a region in central Asia located in present-day Afghanistan, which for centuries was the main source of the red rocks. The red gems are still treated as substitutes for ruby to this day. That was before the advent of modern science, when the red gemstones were erroneously identified with rubies.
